What Is a Nuzlocke Challenge?

A Nuzlocke challenge is a set of self-imposed rules that make Pokémon games significantly harder and more emotionally engaging. Originally created by artist Nick Franco in a webcomic series, the Nuzlocke challenge has become one of the most popular ways to replay Pokémon games worldwide.

The challenge transforms casual Pokémon gameplay into a tense, strategic experience where every encounter matters, every battle could mean permanent loss, and every victory feels earned. Many players say that a Nuzlocke run is the closest you can get to the "real" Pokémon experience the games were always meant to deliver.

Core Nuzlocke Rules

01

First Encounter Only

You may only catch the first Pokémon you encounter on each route or area. If you fail to catch it, you get nothing from that route — no second chances.

02

Faint = Death

If a Pokémon faints in battle, it is considered permanently dead. You must release it or box it forever. No revives, no exceptions.

03

Nickname All Pokémon

Every Pokémon you catch must be given a nickname. This builds emotional attachment and makes every loss hit harder.

Popular Optional Rules

Many players add extra rules to customize their Nuzlocke experience. The Dupes Clause lets you skip duplicate species you've already caught. The Shiny Clause allows you to catch any shiny Pokémon regardless of route rules. Level caps prevent you from over-leveling past the next gym leader's highest Pokémon. Some players even run Hardcore Nuzlockes with no items in battle and mandatory Set mode.

Why Use a Nuzlocke Tracker?

Keeping track of your encounters, team status, and route progress manually is tedious and error-prone. A Nuzlocke tracker solves this by giving you a clean, organized way to:

Record every encounter — log which Pokémon you found on each route, whether you caught it, and its current status. Monitor your team — see your active team of 6 at a glance, with clear indicators for alive, boxed, and fallen Pokémon. Avoid mistakes — never accidentally revisit a route or forget which Pokémon is dead. Preserve your run history — your data is saved locally in your browser so you can close the tab and come back anytime.

How to Use This Nuzlocke Tracker

Using this tracker is simple. First, select your game version from the dropdown menu. Then, as you play through the game and encounter Pokémon on each route, add each encounter using the form above. Enter the Pokémon's name, give it a nickname, note the route, and set its status. Your first 6 alive Pokémon will automatically appear in the Current Team panel on the right. If a Pokémon faints, click the skull button to mark it as dead — it will be removed from your active team. All data is saved automatically to your browser.

What is a Nuzlocke run?

A Nuzlocke run is a self-imposed challenge playthrough of any Pokémon game. The two core rules are that you can only catch the first Pokémon on each route, and any Pokémon that faints is considered permanently dead. It makes the games much harder and more engaging.
