Emerald Nuzlocke Encounter Guide — Best Catches by Route

Knowing which routes have the best encounters is crucial for building a strong Hoenn team.

Early Game (Badges 1-3)

Route 102 — Ralts (S-tier): Only 4% encounter rate but absolutely worth resetting for. Gardevoir is a top 3 Pokemon in any Emerald Nuzlocke. Trace ability copies the opponent ability which can be game-changing.

Petalburg Woods — Shroomish (A-tier): Breloom with Spore (100% accuracy sleep) plus Focus Punch is one of the most broken combinations in Gen 3. Effect Spore can also save you in emergencies.

Granite Cave — Aron (A-tier): Aggron has incredible Defense and decent Attack. Steel/Rock gives tons of resistances. Rock Head plus Double-Edge deals massive damage with no recoil.

Route 104 — Wingull: Pelipper is a solid Water/Flying with good bulk. Essential for Flannery gym if you did not pick Mudkip.

Mid Game (Badges 4-6)

Route 111 — Trapinch: Flygon (Ground/Dragon) is excellent with Levitate giving Ground immunity. Great speed and coverage moves make it a late-game monster.

Route 110 — Electrike: Manectric is fast and hits hard with STAB Thunderbolt. Static ability can paralyze on contact. Your best answer to Water types.

Route 119 — Tropius: Flying/Grass with decent bulk. Access to Fly makes it a useful HM user that can also contribute in battle with Solar Beam and Air Slash.

Magikarp (any water): Gyarados is Gyarados. Intimidate plus Dragon Dance plus massive Attack stat. Always worth fishing for in any body of water.

Late Game (Badges 7-8 + E4)

Shoal Cave — Snorunt: Glalie provides crucial Ice-type coverage for Drake Dragon team in the Elite Four. Ice Beam from a decent Special Attack stat can handle all five of his Pokemon.

Safari Zone — Heracross: If you are lucky enough to find one, Heracross is an absolute monster. Guts ability plus STAB Megahorn destroys everything including Sidney and Phoebe.

Victory Road — Hariyama: Late encounter but incredibly powerful. Thick Fat reduces Fire and Ice damage. Vital Throw never misses. Great for the Elite Four.
